... "In the town there is no work, if you sow you have enough to eat, but if you don't, the government doesn't help you, they only want you to vote and if they don't, they don't support you".
These were the words of Norberto Díaz Hernández, originally from the state of Guerrero, one of hundreds of day labourers who were recruited to work on at least four alleged ranches operated by Asians....
With their eyes sadly fixed on the ground, without much notion of their future, that of their wife and 13-year-old daughter, they work every day for up to 17 hours for a pay of $600.00 pesos, or $35.00 pesos per hour. Limited to receiving benefits, good treatment and a better quality of life.
"They say they pay you by the pound, but you can't understand them, but sometimes they say they pay you by the box, I really don't know. The most I've earned is 2,900 pesos a week, do you think the payment is fair, I don't know if the payment is fair (...), I spend that money in a shop right here", she shared....
The Guanajuato State Prosecutor's Office rescued 642 workers, of which 458 are adults, 184 are children, while 30 adolescents escaped from the place...
