In 2021 human rights defender Pedro Velasco Tumiño recieved death threats in by unknown individuals in Cauca, Colombia. He was actively resisting the operations of the paper company Smurfit Kappa – Cartón de Colombia S.A. His community has been under threat since 2021, when Indigenous, campesino, and Afro-descendant communities began reclaiming their lands from Smurfit Kappa.
