Land rights defender Siyabonga Manqele, part of the Abahlali baseMjondolo movement in South Africa, was shot and killed on 11 March 2022 when masked police officers raided the nearby eNkanini settlement in Durban. His killing appears to be part of a pattern of ongoing attacks on the community and its members, including Ayanda Ngila, killed on the same week. The eKhenana settlement has been facing attempts at forcible evictions and its leaders have been facing ongoing attacks. According to ABM, after the organisation successfully interdicted the municipality from evicting 109 families, the party started working with a well-known family in the taxi business to intimidate people with the aim to vacate the land to make way to build flats.
