In March 2021, the Ruckus Society and Indigenous Peoples Power Project received a subpoena from Energy Transfer. In the same year, the company also sent subpoenas to various actors who took action against the Dakota Access Pipeline (DAPL) and supported the Standing Rock movement. Both organizations promote nonviolent direct action. Also, Energy Transfer subpoenaed officials involved in inspecting the pipeline route on behalf of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe, including Dr Kelly Morgan, an archaeologist for the tribe, and Tim Mentz, the tribe’s former tribal historic preservation officer.
