USA: US announces development of second National Action Plan on Responsible Business Conduct
In June 2021, the Biden administration announced that it would develop a new National Action Plan on Responsible Business Conduct (NAP). The new NAP would provide an opportunity for the US Government to renew its commitment to the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights, as well as commitments under the OECD Guidelines for Multinational Enterprises. The Government initiated a series of consultations with civil society, academia, business and industry groups over the course of 2021 and 2022.
In March 2024, the Government released the second National Action Plan on Responsible Business Conduct. The second NAP set out four priority areas:
- Establishing a Federal Advisory Committee on Responsible Business Conduct
- Strengthening respect for human rights in federal procurement policies and processes
- Strengthening access to remedy
- Providing resources to businesses
It further elaborates commitments by the US Government to advance responsible business conduct in the areas of technology, workers' rights, environment, climate, and the just transition, and anti-corruption.
