Armenia: Yerevan Municipality Responded to Statement Made by Residents and NGOs against Spandaryan Basalt Mining

In...reply letter to the the residents of Yerevan and a number of NGOs, Yerevan Municipality informs that the current city authorities have rejected all applications for the development of new mines during their tenure, and have initiated an environmental impact assessment of the existing abandoned mines.

As the letter says,...22 non-metallic mines are exploited in Yerevan. In recent years, the maximum allowable dust concentration (MPC) in Yerevan has often been significantly (several times) exceeded. At the same time, despite the apparent significant pollution near the existing mines, there are no monitoring data available.

In view of the above, as well as all the negative opinions of the population and the professional community on mining projects in the city, all applications for the developments of new mines were rejected on behalf of the community during the tenure of the current city authorities...and the environmental impact assessment study has been initiated...
