Brazil: Federal Judge acquits Akroá Gamella Indigenous leaders arrested for protecting their lands from energy company

On 18 November, 2021, 16 indigenous of the Akroá Gamella people were arrested after protests obstructing the construction of transmission lines by the company Equatorial Energia in the Taquaritiua Indigenous Territory in the municipality of Viana, state of Maranhão, Brazil. The indigenous people were released two days later. According to the Indigenous Missionary Council (CIMI), the company, which reportedly lacked judicial warrant to carry out the operation, called the military police that proceeded to carry out the arrests. Among those arrested were an adolescent and three women, one of whom was breastfeeding.

In June 2022, a Federal Judge dismissed the criminal case against the Indigenous leaders.
