Colombia: Academic Analysis Points to Risks to Water Access from Zijin-Continental Gold Mining in Antioquia

... Since 2007, the company Continental Gold has been developing a set of gold mining activities in the municipality of Buriticá (Antioquia), which have gone from a scale of 30 tons per day, to becoming the owner of the main underground mine in the region. However, the communities argue that the presence of this company is not without controversy, since for the development of the Buriticá project, the construction of a dam for the storage of tailings is being considered, which could significantly affect the Bermejal stream, as presented in the research of professors from the Javeriana and National Universities of Colombia. The Business and Human Rights Resource Centre invited Continental Gold [now Zijin-Continental Gold] to respond. The response is available (in Spanish), in addition to the "Guidelines on Social Responsibility in Foreign Investment in Mining", from the China Chamber of Commerce for Metals, Minerals and Chemicals Importers and Exporters.
