Female Agricultural Workers Routinely Encounter Rape and Sexual Harassment [USA]

An investigation…reveals that female workers in the agriculture industry face rape, routine harassment, and peril…[A]n estimated 40 percent experience sexual harassment on the job, ranging from verbal advances to rape…As reflected in civil court documents, in nearly every case, workers lodged complaints with company management in an attempt to stop the abuse. Among those women, 85 percent faced retaliation, including being demoted, fired, or further harassed. The investigation could not locate a single case in which the accused attacker had been criminally prosecuted…Further complicating the issue of reporting and prosecuting is the fact that most agricultural workers are undocumented immigrants…At the moment, the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission is the only federal agency actively fighting on-the-job sexual harassment and violence for farmworkers…
