The Environmental Ministry shut down the operation after it found high sedimentation levels/turbidity around the mining site. This situation is believed to be an impact from PT ASP (Anugerah Surya Pratama) nickel mining operation.
"The turbidity within the coastal area is quite high, and this is certainly a consequence that the company must bear," Hanif (Environment Minister Hanif Faisol Nurofiq) said.
According to Hanif, the adverse environmental impact in Manuran island is considered severe. The main reason for waterway turbidity in Manuran island was the sedimentation/settling pond owned by the company failed to filter the waste before it flowed to the sea. "This has caused environmental degradation, high levels of seaways turbidity, and the company should bear the consequences", said Hanif.
Hanif added, a small island like Manuran (743 acres) has limited environmental support capacity. Means, that the recovery process will be hard to implement. "Environmental degradation caused by the mining operations will be subjected to legal & environmental inquiries," said Hanif.
