On 15 August 2023, land defender, Jomo Keromeng was shot 16 times and killed in his mining-affected community of Sefikile in Bakgatla Ba Kgafela, South Africa.

Keromeng was at the forefront of fighting corruption claims, defending the rights of his community against mining interests.
