Netherlands: Undocumented cleaners allege rights abuses at luxury gym, incl. conditions of human trafficking; prosecution office dismisses workers' complaints; incl. co. comment

In August 2025, it was reported that undocumented cleaners in the Netherlands, including those working at the luxury gym chain Saints & Stars, face widespread labour exploitation.

Later, a study by Utrecht University found that undocumented migrants, particularly those employed informally in private homes, are subject to unregulated working conditions, lack of contracts, and chronic job insecurity. Interviews with 22 workers revealed fears of deportation, which prevent them from reporting abuse. Researchers warned that current Dutch labour regulations for cleaning work facilitate such exploitation by failing to provide legal employment pathways or oversight for undocumented workers.

Later reporting on the luxury gym case said the company offered the workers money to say they had been treated well; and the workers also claim physical and verbal abuse, among others abuses that the complainants argue satisfy "both Dutch and international legal definitions of human trafficking", according to InfoMigrants.

The Dutch Public Prosecution Office later dismissed the workers' labor exploitation complaints, a decision criticized by the migrants and migrant rights group, Migrante-Netherlands. In a statement, Saints & Stars CEO said, "Based on what we know at this stage, the reality diverges significantly from how the situation has been portrayed", and that "every hour worked has been compensated". The company said that the management team has been suspended and the company has initiated the process of appointing an independent research organization to conduct a review.
