On 26 February 2025, human rights defenders, Shaffic Kalyango, Joseph Ssengozi, Namuddu Rahima, Gilbert Nayebare, Arafat Mawanda, Hilary Mangeni and Brillian Mufere were arrested, charged and remanded to Luzira prison following a peaceful protest at the European Union Mission against the ongoing construction of the $5 billion East African Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP).

According to the charge sheet, the activists were “charged with common nuisance under Section 65€ of the Road Acts Cap 346”. Police stated that their actions disrupted business at the EU offices, leading to their arrest and remand, court heard.
