At the G20 summit held on 4–5 September 2016 in the Chinese city of Hangzhou, state leaders gathered together to discuss a wide range of issues related to the global economy.

In the G20 Leaders’ Communique issued at the summit closing, the group highlighted its commitment to the Paris Agreement, and "signalled its backing for a wave of green finance reforms designed to mobilise trillions of dollars in low carbon infrastructure and technology investment". G20 leaders also committed to work for a "fair and modern international tax system" by combatting tax avoidance.

However, campaigners showed disappoints with the group's failure to set fossil fuel subsidy deadline. NGOs (including Oxfam) also expressed concern that the proposed measures may not be adequate in tackling global tax avoidance, and urges more power to be given to developing countries in the decision making alongside the G20.
