Brazil: More than 90 organizations support boycott against agribusiness from Mato Grosso do Sul citing links to human rights abuses
More than 90 national and international social movement organizations, NGOs, government agencies support the Boycott Campaign against agribusiness from Mato Grosso do Sul, convened by the Conselho do Povo Terena (Terena People's Council) and Conselho Aty Guassú do Povo Guarani-Kaiowá (Aty Guassu Council of the Guarani-Kaiowá people), since October 2015 . The campaign has the intention to call for international boycott to the purchase and consumption of products from the Mato Grosso do Sul agribusiness. The organizations say there are serious human rights abuses and violations against the indigenous population of Brazil, especially in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul. They report… “…torture, rape, spanking, armed attacks and murders involving militias of gunmen and paramilitary organizations hired by farmers…”. They stated there is… “an ongoing real * genocide, especially the Guarani-Kaiowá people”. According to the campaign, the conflict is a result of land disputes, many traditionally indigenous, that are still awaiting demarcation and ratification, as guaranteed in the Federal Constitution.
