China: Investigation finds low wages, excessive overtime, sexual harassment and violence in Mattel toy factory in China
In 2024, an investigation by China Labor Watch (CLW) and ActionAid France uncovered labor abuses at Chinese toy factories that supply major brands, including Mattel, Hasbro, and Disney. Mostly female workers reported sexual harassment, verbal abuse, and grueling overtime, all of which violate labor laws. Despite corporate codes of conduct, the report found that factories such as Chang'An Mattel showed systemic mistreatment.
As a follow-up to a 2020 investigation, the 2024 investigation revealed that the toy industry had not made significant improvements to working conditions, particularly with regard to eradicating sexual harassment in the workplace.
In 2025, The Sun published a news article based on materials from CLW's report, including information gathered from interviews with CLW representatives. The Sun claimed to have contacted Mattel, Hasbro, Disney, the International Council of Toy Industries (ICTI), and the Toy Retailers Association for comment. No responses have been reported yet.
