[video] Doubts over Malaysia's visa amnesty programme
Malaysia is home to about two million illegal immigrants, many of whom do jobs locals see as menial. Under a new [government] scheme, they will be able to register and work legally for a fee of about $250. But many foreign workers have expressed doubts about the initiative. [transcript:] [Migrant workers] say unscrupulous people acting as employment agents took their passports and visas when they arrived...[M]any undocumented foreign workers say they have misgivings about the [the government amnesty] programme...[S]ocial welfare groups say that in practice it would be difficult for the government to register a large number of migrants leading most to private companies licenced to carry out the process..."[Migrants] are not willing to wait, so still they have to go to the agents" [co-founder of the Human Caring Society says]
