Latin America: OCMAL surveillance network publishes report on mining and Covid-19

"1st Report of the OCMAL Monitoring Network on Mining and Covid-19" - 22 July 2020

... OCMAL, aware of the risks of mining in the circumstances experienced as a result of the pandemic, launched a Surveillance Network on Mining and Covid-19 to report on the effects of the activity in this new reality and at the same time make known the situation in several countries in the region ... Today, we present the first version, hoping to periodically update the information and thus call for vigilance against attempts by companies and governments to use the excuse of the pandemic to expand mining activities... On the other hand, communities affected by mining projects have maintained their rejection with physical and virtual demonstrations, against a real onslaught of mining companies using the emergency to gain ground especially in those locations where the lack of social license is one of their biggest problems... Perhaps the most dramatic case is located in the town of Calama in northern Chile, affected by the operation of large mining companies, among which the state-owned Codelco stands out, which nationwide as of July 10 had almost 3,000 infected workers and eight deaths as of July 10… Not far behind are Brazil and Peru, which together with Chile have been countries that have allowed the operation of mining despite the warnings about the risks of such a provision. The biosafety measures implemented to control infections among mining workers have been insufficient in light of the results of infections in this extractive sector...
