A sanitation worker died due to an "industrial accident" at a California burrito factory, police and city officials said. The accident involved the worker getting stuck in an empty kettle that he was cleaning, according to the burrito company.

The incident occurred on Sunday, July 13, at Tina’s Burritos' factory in Vernon, a city about four miles away from Los Angeles, according to statements emailed to USA TODAY by Vernon police and city officials. Officers were dispatched to the factory around 9:32 p.m. to help the Los Angeles County Fire Department with the industrial accident, police added.

Upon arrival, officers were told by fire personnel that the 19-year-old worker was involved in an industrial accident, and he had succumbed to his injuries, police said.

In a statement to USA TODAY on Tuesday, July 15, Tina's Burritos said the employee was sanitizing and prepping the kettle for the next day’s production run.

"Despite the immediate response of coworkers and emergency personnel, he tragically passed away at the scene," the statement reads. "Our hearts are with his family, friends, and all who knew and worked alongside him. This is a devastating loss for everyone at Tina’s."…
