France: TikTok accused of allegedly exposing minors to harmful content; incl. company comments

Plann CC BY-NC 4.0

In September 2023 and November 2024, French families sued TikTok, alleging its algorithms exposed minors to self-harm content linked to suicides.

Following a parliamentary committee investigation, French MPs urged a criminal inquiry into the platform’s impact on children’s mental health, citing reports by Amnesty International and others.

On 4 November 2025, French prosecutors opened a criminal investigation into TikTok for allegedly promoting suicide and failing to report related content, following mounting public and parliamentary pressure.

Amnesty International also announced plans to file a complaint under the EU Digital Services Act for TikTok’s alleged failure to protect minors.

TikTok denies the allegations, stating it invests heavily in teen-safety features and removes most violative content before viewing.
