Global: Working paper by Transparency International exposes how corruption enables attacks against HRDs
Transparency International
This new report by Transparency International highlights that businesses play a crucial role in combating impunity and corruption to protect environmental defenders. It emphasizes the responsibility of companies to respect human rights and avoid complicity in abuses against defenders, particularly in sectors like mining, energy, and agriculture where environmental conflicts are common. The report calls for corporate transparency, accountability, and the implementation of strong due diligence processes to prevent and respond effectively to threats faced by environmental defenders. It also stresses the need for collaboration between businesses, states, and civil society to establish safe and enabling environments for defenders, ensuring investigations and remedies when violations occur. Ultimately, the report advocates for a zero-tolerance approach to corruption and impunity to safeguard those defending the environment worldwide.
