Myanmar: Rights violations reported at backpack factory

Обвинения

"SOLO brand backpack garment workers' rights violated and excessive record demands", 12 February 2024

At the MYAM BAG factory, a SOLO brand backpack factory, workers say they are violating labor rights and demanding excessive [targets].

The worker said that a machine line with about 60 male and female workers sews 200 backpacks per hour, and this rate is equivalent to sewing 3 backpacks per hour per worker.

The worker said that according to the requested [targets], each worker has to sew about 24 backpacks in an 8-hour workday, and the wage rate being paid is only 5,800 kyats.

The worker said that without the formation of a labor union in the workplace, they would not be able to enjoy the benefits that workers are entitled to.

The factory...is operating with more than 1,000 workers.

"If you miss a day of work due to illness or if it's an emergency, [they] don't give you leave. Because of that, if you miss a day, you get 20,000 kyats [cut from the] day's pay. It's very painful for the workers..." the worker said.

The worker continued, "...In fact, the workers who were forced to [meet targets] barely [drink] enough water," the worker continued.

The workers said that they would like to ask for things such as asking for[targets] that worker[s] can [meet] and not to shout [at] worker[s] [to meet targets]...
