"Indigenous Platform calls for the inclusion of an environmental chapter in the Peru-China FTA" – 20 October 2020

The Amazon Indigenous Platform for Monitoring Chinese Investment in Peru presented a proposal for an environmental chapter to the Chinese Embassy in Peru and the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism (MINCETUR) to be included in the renegotiation of the Peru-China FTA, currently underway.

...The importance of the proposal lies in the fact that important Chinese investments are located in or bordering with indigenous territories and areas of high biological diversity. Let's also remember that China is Peru’s main trade partner and has an accumulated direct investment of US$ 19.6 million in our country, between 2006 and 2018, of which 79%. 7% corresponds to the mining and hydrocarbon sectors (1)...The Platform - made up of the indigenous organisations AIDESEP, ORPIO and CORPI (Loreto), ORAU (Ucayali) and COMARU (Cusco) - proposes to include 11 negotiating axes on environmental issues in the FTA, among which it is important to incorporate the commitment not to promote trade or investment by weakening, reducing or not applying the environmental legislation of both countries, a proposal of special importance in these times of economic reactivation.
