“Samsung Heavy Industries under fire again as subcontractor dies in fatal workplace accident”, 28 May 2025

… According to Samsung Heavy Industries, a fatal workplace accident occurred around 10:30 a.m. on 27 May at the company’s shipyard in Geoje, South Gyeongsang Province. The victim, identified as Mr. A, was an employee of an external subcontractor and died after becoming trapped between a monorail and a structural frame while repairing ship crane components supplied by his own company. He was rushed to hospital but later died from his injuries.

[…] Just days earlier, on 23 May, Samsung Heavy Industries had inaugurated a new Integrated Control Centre designed to enhance safety and security at the Geoje shipyard, which has long faced criticism over repeated serious industrial accidents.

[…] In the wake of each incident, labour and civil society groups have consistently called for investigation and accountability at the top levels of management. They argue that the recurring accidents reflect a failure by Samsung Heavy Industries, as the main contractor, to properly manage workplace risks.

[…] A spokesperson for Samsung Heavy Industries told 00News that the exact circumstances of the incident are under investigation by relevant authorities, and that further comments—including on measures for preventing recurrence—would follow once the investigation is complete.
