The follow-up report by YPD on environmental and social impacts assessment of Lobé-Kribi iron mining project alleges that the project poses a direct threat to the ancestral rights of local communities and the indigenous Bagyéli people. Despite the legal framework established by the 2022 convention, a climate of opacity persists. The concerns of the local populations focus on four (04) major areas: 1. Social uncertainty: Lack of transparency regarding the Community Development Programme (Article 44) of the convention. 2. Access to information: Abuse of confidentiality (Article 27), which deprives local residents of any information about the project, including information that is considered public according to regulations. 3. Environmental and social risks: fear of deforestation without compensation measures, fear of irreversible coastal pollution and degradation of biodiversity and cultural sovereignty. 4. Loss of income sources: income from fishing, the main local activity, is likely to decline due to the scarcity of fish as a result of coastal pollution. A significant ecotourism industry has developed around sea turtles, which unfortunately may seek other shelters if the waters become polluted.
