Two people were killed and five injured during protests against the Chinese-owned gold mining company Hongxing, with around 40 arrests made. Locals decided to protest against the company after it caused the "environmental degradation and the destruction of villagers' fields in full bloom". According to the protesters, the situation became violent after the intervention of the defence and security forces, who used firearms and tear gas against the protesters.
