France: Government dissolves climate action group responsible for direct action targeting major projects including agribusiness & extractives

Les Soulèvements de la Terre (Earth Uprisings) is a group made up of local collectives in defense of territory, environmental groups, farmers, autonomous collectives, naturalist groups or trade union unions. Since 2021 they have called for several mass mobilisations accompanied by direct actions and sabotage against major projects, such as the creation of a reservoir for artificial snow in the ski resort of La Clusaz, the expansion of quarries at a Lafarge cement plant or against alleged water grabbing by agribusiness in different areas.

On 21 June 2023, the Minister of Interior, Gérald Darmanin, announced the decree dissolving the movement, a procedure initiated at the end of March after the violent clashes between activists and police in Sainte-Soline (Deux -Sèvres) which caused 200 environmental activists to be injured. Darmanin labelled some of the activists involved in the protest “eco-terrorists”.
