On 2 August 2021, human rights defender Huber Samir Camayo was attacked and killed by the Mobile Anti-Riot Squad (ESMAD) in Cajibío, Colombia. He was actively resisting operations of the paper company Smurfit Kappa – Cartón de Colombia S.A. The Misak, Nasa and Kokonuko Indigenous peoples, together with campesino and Afro-descendant communities in the Cauca region of Colombia, have been facing violence in the process of seeking to recover their historical lands, which are currently owned by Smurfit Kappa. Since 2021 the communities have been facing threats and violence for their work towards recovering their lands.
