Josimar da Silva Pereira
Sources
Josimar da Silva Pereira, a farmer, camper and member of the Landless Rural Workers' Movement (MST), was murdered in the city of Vitória de Santo Antão (PE), where he lived. The 30-year-old peasant was shot in the back of the head and back while travelling by motorbike to the Francisco de Assis Camp, where he was going to work on irrigating organic rice crops. Josimar had been fighting for the expropriation of the São Francisco mill, where the camp is located, for 29 years. Because of the conflicts and threats surrounding the dispute over the area, which has been repossessed by JB Group, members of the camp's coordination team are in the State Programme for the Protection and Defence of Human Rights Defenders. Josimar, however, was not there.
