Migrant Workers Suffered Worst Forms of Abuse in Asia

The Business and Human Rights Resource Centre has shared intriguing data on the types of abuse inflicted on migrant workers globally, with Asia-Pacific a hotspot for the migrant abuse cases.

Abuse against migrant workers are the highest in Asia Pacific at 186 reports, or 30 percent of the global total, with Malaysia holding the top spot for the most number of cases in the region.

According to the Business and Human Rights Resource Centre (BHRRC), workers from Nepal, the Philippines, Bangladesh, India and China were the most often exposed to abuse in the survey period between December 1, 2022 and November 30, 2023.

In Asia, wage theft made up 30 percent of most frequently reported cases, followed by occupational health and safety breaches (29 percent), recruitment fee-charging (26 percent), intimidation (22 percent), precarious or unsuitable living conditions (18 percent), and withholding of passports.

The data shared ahead of International Migrants Day 2023 on December 18, showed that the most dangerous sectors for migrant workers in Asia-Pacific were agriculture and fishing, manufacturing, and construction and engineering…

Migrant workers are often the “invisible glue” holding the global economy together, BHRRC senior migrant rights researcher Isobel Archer mentioned in a statement on Wednesday.
