Myanmar: Factory management threatens to call military to arrest protesting workers demanding allowance
In August 2024, it was reported that management at Xiang Rong threated to call the military and police to arrest workers who staged a protest demanding the factory pay the 1,000 kyat allowance they are owed. The workers also reported that an inspection was undertaken at the factory regarding excessive overtime incl. on Sundays, but no action was taken, and stated that if workers took more than five days leave, their seniority leave would be recalculated. Workers reportedly work six hours straight without food, receiving a warning and a fine if they go out to buy food. The toilets are reportedly unsafe and dirty, and waste is dumped close to the workers’ eating area.
In December 2024, Business & Human Rights Resource Centre invited Olympia to respond.
