On June 1, 2020, a resident of Kampung Ikana village in Papua, Indonesia, violently attacked with machetes other villagers and in particular, the land and environmental defender Onesimus Wetaku (Ones) and his family, including a child, leaving several injured. He also attacked Ones Wetaku with a machete until, gravely cutting his left hand. Ones Wetaku has reported this attack to the South Sorong Police Station on June 20, 2020. Wetaku suspected the attack was related to conflict and tension between residents who supportive and opposed the existence of the oil palm plantation company PT. Putera Manunggal Perkasa, which operates in their customary territories. Since 2015, Yakob Sowe, along with Onesimus Wetaku and other Ikanan residents, have been actively fighting for and demanding their rights to the lands, forests, and sources of subsistence taken from them and destroyed by the palm oil plantation company PT. Putera Manunggal Perkasa, a subsidiary of Austino Nusantara Jaya (ANJ) Group. Ones Wetaku had previously been threatened with death and intimidated several times. In March 2018, his wife was reportedly insulted and attacked using a machete by one of the residents who was serving as the company's public relations officer. As a result of their activities, Yakob and Ones have also endured repeated verbal violence and death threats, and become targets of recrimination among people within their own communities. For example, on Tuesday 30 July 2019, local villagers claimed that Yakob Sowe and Ones Wetaku had used black magic to kill one of their children in February 2019.
