Petrus Kinggo is an indigenous leader and land rights defender in Boven Digoel district in Papua, Indonesia. Kinggo has been campaigning for a palm oil firm to return land grabbed from his people since 2018. Kinggo is up against PT. Tunas Sawa Erma POP A, a subsidiary of the Korindo Group, a joint Indonesian and Korean palm oil plantation, which he accuses of grabbing people’s land and damaging the environment in southern Papua. In June 2019 Petrus Kinggo experienced an incident involving a member of the armed forces and other unknown people. They came and knocked on the Petrus Kinggo's house loudly at midnight, under the effect of alchool. They asked about Petrus's whereabouts, but he was not at home at the time. Kinggo felt these actions were aimed to intimidate him and his family. The Indonesian military has been accused by activist groups of gross human rights abuses in its attempts to suppress dissent in Papua and protect business interests there, and has also previously approached Kinggo and other local residents to convince them to accept money from the Korindo group, in exchange for land rights.
