Portugal: Shoe factory closes after facing difficulties post-pandemic

"Sinovir shoe factory closes and leaves 80 people jobless in Famalicão", 18 October 2024

The Sinovir shoe factory in Novais, Vila Nova de Famalicão, has closed its doors, leaving around 80 workers unemployed, a union source told Lusa on Friday.

According to Aida Sá, from the Minho and Trás-os-Montes Footwear, Luggage, Components, Forms and Tannery Union, the company claimed that it began to experience difficulties after the Covid-19 pandemic, with a consequent drop in orders.

‘It ended up filing for insolvency and closed its doors at the end of September,’ she said. She emphasised that the company ‘left everything paid’ to the workers.

‘There's nothing in arrears,’ she said. The workers are now waiting to be provided with the necessary documentation to be able to claim unemployment benefit.
