“Worker buried 21m underground in Posco E&C tunnel collapse found dead”, 16 April 2025
The worker in his 50s who went missing following a tunnel collapse at the Shin Ansan Line double-track railway construction site in Gwangmyeong, Gyeonggi Province, was found dead on the sixth day after the accident, 16 April.
…The missing worker, Mr K, an employee of the construction firm POSCO E&C, became trapped at approximately 3:13pm on 11 April when both the underground tunnel site for Section 5-2 of the Shin Ansan Line in Iljik-dong, Gwangmyeong, and the overlying road collapsed.
Rescue teams reached the buried container where Mr K was believed to be located—21 metres below ground—at around 6:03pm on the 16th, using an endoscopic camera to confirm partial remains. However, it took over two more hours to recover the body due to heavy debris blocking access.
…POSCO E&C’s CEO Jeong Hee-min issued an apology shortly after the news of Mr K’s death was confirmed, stating, “We are devastated by the loss of our valued employee. We extend our deepest condolences to the bereaved family and will fully cooperate in identifying the cause of the accident.”
