Australia: US private prisons operator's alleged security failures, which led to human rights violations, surface as Govt. negotiates for co. to take over Nauru detention facilities

US-based company Management and Training Corporation (MTC) is reportedly set to take over detention facilities on Nauru as an Australian government contractor. Australian media has drawn attention to allegations of the company's chequered human rights record. In particular, allegations include “gross negligence" and "egregious" security failures leading to the gang-rape of a woman in detention, the murder of two retirees by escaped prisoners, and the months-long solitary confinement of a US citizen wrongfully held in immigration detention.

Business & Human Rights Resource Centre invited MTC to respond to the allegations. The company did not respond.
