Brazil: Article analyses contradictions between Vale's corporate social responsibility policy and its alleged socially irresponsible conduct

Agência Brasil - EBC

Beatriz Macchione Saes, Daniela Del Bene, Raquel Neyra, Lucrecia Wagner and Joan Martínez-Alier are the authors of the article “Environmental justice and corporate social irresponsibility: the case of the mining company Vale S.A”, published in the magazine Ambiente e Sociedade. The paper analyses 30 cases of environmental conflicts in which Vale had a prominent role in light of the company’s corporate social responsibility (CSR) discourses and practices. The authors believe that there is a contradiction between Vale’s performance and its CSR discourse, reproducing environmental injustices and being socially irresponsible.

We invited Vale to comment on the article and the company did so.
