Brazil: Footwear factory closure linked to multiple crises incl. US tariffs

"Closure of footwear factory leaves 200 unemployed in Rio Grande do Sul", 11 March 2026

The footwear manufacturer [Calçados Tabita], which closed its activities after 55 years, left 200 workers unemployed in Rio Grande do Sul...

The footwear company informs that "all dismissals were made with total transparency with the Igrejinha workers' union (Union of Workers in the Footwear, Clothing and Footwear Components Industries of Igrejinha), which has provided all the support to the workers". In the statement, the company said that all its assets are being made available for the payment of severance payments to workers and also to its other creditors...

Among the reasons that led to the closure of Calçados Tabita, the company points to the covid-19 pandemic, the "tariff" imposed by the United States on Brazilian products and the fire that hit the company's factory last year. "We had been facing difficulties since the pandemic, a situation that was aggravated by the tariff on exports and also with the fire that hit the facilities in May last year," says the footwear manufacturer in the statement.

At the end of its operations, the company was producing a thousand pairs of women's leather shoes per day, operating the Tabita and Divalesi brands, in addition to production for third-party labels via private label. The footwear company served customers in Brazil and 45 other countries.
