Codelco's response to the collapse at El Teniente
[...]
Fulfilling the right to information, Codelco maintained active communication with the public, the authorities and the families:
- Technical and executive spokespersons were appointed from the very first day, including press conferences with the Chairman of the Board, the Chief Executive Officer, the General Manager of El Teniente and the Vice-President of People Management.
• On 2 August, the discovery of human remains was reported. This information was first communicated to the families, then to the government, and finally to the public.
Additionally, our company took measures to safeguard the right to emotional and social protection of the affected families and workers. In general terms, the containment and support plan was structured in four stages:
a. Addressing the initial crisis...
b. Containment phase...
c. Recovery...
d. Learning and continuity...
Specifically, for the families the following was established:
✓ Psychological and social support from day one, with direct and ongoing assistance.
✓ A meeting space at El Teniente, available from 1 August, providing emotional and logistical support.
✓ Direct and priority communication, including updates every two hours.
✓ Funeral assistance offered to all families, respecting individual decisions.
✓ Presence of executives at funerals and wakes.
✓ Commitment to ongoing support...
✓ Activation of the Psychosocial Support and Guidance Centre (CECOP)...
✓ More than 9,200 workers took part in group support activities: “Together in mourning”, dialogue sessions, talks and workshops...
✓ Coordination with contractors to extend the containment plan, achieving 71% coverage in critical areas.
✓ Safety reflection sessions were held across all Codelco divisions, involving more than 2,000 people.
✓ Meetings with trade unions and workers in the field, reinforcing the commitment to safety.
✓ Special care was given to the more than 100 brigade members and rescuers who took part intensively in the search efforts over 72 hours...
As is publicly known, the authority’s investigation is ongoing, and it is therefore not possible to refer to facts or background related to the causes of the accident. Further information available at: https://www.codelco.com/informacion-accidente-en-el-teniente...
