Heidelberg Materials response to Evian letter outreach
Business & Human Rights Resource Centre invited Heidelberg Materials to comment on a letter that emerged from the 2025 Franco-German business meeting in Evian, France. We asked the following two questions:
- Is it Heidelberg Materials position to call for the full abolition of the CSDDD?
- If it is, has your company considered the human rights risks or impacts of taking this stance publicly, and subjected it to a human rights due diligence process? If so, what have been your company’s conclusions and any action plan?
Heidelberg Materials provided the following response:
Heidelberg Materials is fully committed to its climate targets and sustainability roadmap: by 2030 we aim to reduce our CO2 footprint to 400kg CO2/t cementitious materials, and to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050. In mature markets like Europe, we expect to move even faster. These are the most ambitions CO2 targets in our industry, aligned with the Science-Based Targets initiative (SBTi).
As part of our decarbonisation journey, we support global and regional climate ambitions. We see emissions trading (including the EU ETS) as essential tools to drive industrial transformation. At the same time, climate protection must go hand in hand with viable business models, which is why we support a timely implementation of a robust Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM).
