Internationan Hydropower Association responded to allegations of lack of FPIC standards

Thanks for letting us know your concerns. IHA is the global voice of sustainable hydropower, and our members are expected to align with to the Statement “going forward, the only acceptable hydropower is sustainable hydropower”.  This should be demonstrated through alignment with the Hydropower Sustainability Standard, which is a multi-stakeholder designed and governed Standard - independent of IHA. The Standard includes detailed requirements around FPIC for indigenous peoples.

In this case, the project is not operated by one of our members and has not been assessed under the Standard, so we are in no position to comment on its performance against FPIC or other requirements. Nonetheless, we want to see good and best practice applied across the sector.  If helpful, we would be happy to alert our friends in the Nepali National Hydropower Association and the IFC of your concerns with no comments from our side.
