On 21 February 2022, indigenous community leader Juan Tzul from Chinebal, El Estor, Guatemala, was arbitrarily detained. Communities in the south of El Estor consider this detention part of a criminalisation strategy against those who support the anti-mining resistance against the Fenix mine.
On 16 November 2021, the community in Chinebal received an eviction order from the government. Police arrived and houses were burned down and demolished with machinery. More than 90 families lost everything. This community of the indigenous Q'eqchi' people inhabited their ancestral territory until their dispute with the palm oil company NaturAceites arose.
