Sources

Lidia Granados Corral is a human rights defender from the northern State of Chihuahua, Mexico who actively opposes the Samayaluca Copper mine, owned by Canadian mining company VVC Exploration. Both Lidia and her sister Yizni have been victims of misogynistic smear campaigns in order to discredit their resistance. Most notably, on 29th September 2019, Javier Meléndez Cardona, the President of Samalayuca, published on Facebook about the defenders’ pro-abortion positions stating that they “support abortion and the termination of human life”. The Mesoamerican Women Defenders’ Initiative (IMD) link these defamatory remarks to the defenders’ activism against the mining project, highlighting the danger for women in Chihuahua where at least 29 people have been killed for defending their land, territory and natural resources.
