Malaysian company being prosecuted for not paying Bangladeshi workers

The Human Resources Ministry of Malaysia said that the Johor Labour Department is now in the process of enforcing the order issued by the Labour Court to prosecute the company, whose name has been withheld.

It had been given 45 days during which it agreed to settle payment in an out-of-court proceeding at the Dewan Serbaguna Taman Bayu Damai in Pengerang on February 5 that was also witnessed by an official from the Bangladesh High Commission. The company failed to do so.

The ministry said that a total of 10 investigation files had been opened against the company. The prosecution is starting legal proceedings over four charges, while the other six await approval.

If convicted, the company can be fined up to RM 50,000 for each violation, in addition to the quantum of unpaid wages.

It has been blacklisted from hiring foreign workers and applying to bring in new workers from abroad…

The Labour Court ordered the company on February 5 to pay 733 Bangladeshi workers RM 13,500,557.
