Mauritius: 240 garment workers 'blindsided' by sudden layoffs at factory; incl. co. responses
In February 2025, it was reported that 240 workers from Star Knitwear were suddenly informed that they would be made redundant, with many discovering the news via the press. The factory cited ongoing financial losses, rising costs, and a decline in production. Workers also reported that there had been a slowdown in production in December 2024 due to a reduction in orders.
In March 2025, Business & Human Rights Resource Centre invited ASOS, Fairtrade, New Look, URBN (Urban Outfitters and Anthropologie), Le Coq Sportif, Tk Maxx, Mr Price and Polo to respond. The responses and non-responses can be found below.
