Nigeria: Activists raise alarm over multinational takeover of the country’s food and agriculture sector, incl.. Co. non-response

Experts, environmentalists, and food sovereignty advocates are sounding the alarm over what they describe as “a corporate invasion” of Nigeria’s food system. Describing the move as a threat to Nigeria’s food sovereignty and ecological balance, the participants warned that the establishment of large-scale industrial farms under such partnerships could erode local food systems, pollute the environment, and deepen inequality among farmers. The experts further allege large corporations like JBS’s are a threat to the growth of the industry and that the recent move by JBS into the Nigerian food system amounts to “a corporate invasion” among other things. They also warn that “behind…glossy promises lie a model that could fundamentally undermine Nigeria’s food sovereignty,” and that “JBS comes with a reputation; from deforestation in the Amazon to water pollution and human rights violations.” The Business and Human Rights Resource Centre wrote to JBS requesting a response to these allegations, JBS did not respond.
