On 21 March 2019, an arrest warrant was issued against Edison Vargas Huamanga, the vice president of the Fuerabamba Peasant Community, and the Nohemi Portilla Vargas, the secretary. On the same day, Gregorio Rojas, the president of the Community, was arrested in Lima. The charges were extortion and organized crime to the detriment of the Peruvian State and the Chinese mining company MMG Las Bambas. On 29 March 2019, Gregorio Rojas Paniura was released after the prosecutor did not find proof that Gregorio was part of a criminal organization.
