Rand Merchant Bank response to alleged human rights violations at TotalEnergies’ Mozambique LNG project
Dear Manson, in response to your email relating to the TotalEnergies’ Mozambique LNG project “the project” and your request that Rand Merchant Bank (RMB) reconsiders its involvement in the project. We can confirm the following.
No decision has been made by RMB or FirstRand to approve financing for the project should the force majeure be lifted. Any further financing of the project would need to pass through a comprehensive and stringent environmental and social risk assessment process as well as a further credit approval process.
- We note the additional social, environmental and political issues documented in your communication.
- It is also worth noting that all Category A and certain higher risk Category B project finance and project-related corporate loans require review by an independent environmental and/or social expert with relevant expertise, not associated directly with the borrower. This independent review is a critical part of our due diligence.
We also acknowledge your request for responses to specific questions in your communication. This is not something we are in a position to comment on at this stage, however all additional information related to the project will be fully considered as part of the process outlined above.
