On 9 August 2024, police arrested 50 individuals, including 47 students and three taxi drivers, who had planned to march to the Parliament and the National Environment Management Authority offices in Kampala to protest the East African Crude Oil Pipeline project. The next day 45 out of the 47 student activists, who had been detained at the Jinja Road Police Station, were released.

The other two student activists, Shafik Kalyango and Humphrey Oundo, were held at the Central Police Station and charged with "inciting violence". They were released on police bond on 14 August 2024, which requires them to report to police whenever required.
