In March 2025, Politico reported that X (formerly Twitter) has suspended accounts belonging to opposition figures in Türkiye following widespread protests sparked by the arrest of President Erdoğan's main political rival, Istanbul Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu.

The majority of suspended accounts belong to university-associated, and often grassroots, activists who share protest information. Arrests have also been made “related to the social media accounts”. X did not immediately respond to Politico’s request for comment.

Later reporting in April by Politico says X has appealed to Türkiye’s criminal court over an order to block 126 accounts – although Politico notes the order “predates the current wave of protests by several weeks”.

Politico also reports that a Meta spokesperson said the company has been fined a “substantial” amount for not complying with orders to limit content.
